How to interface Cepheid GeneXpert with LabXpert Automation

LabXpert Automation connects with the GeneXpert via TCP/IP using the ASTM communication protocol.


You must install the application on a computer connected to the machine via a network. This guide assumes you have installed the LabXpert Automation application and added the Sysmex XN Series. See How to interface lab equipment with LabXpert Automation for more information.

Configuring Communication

Login to the Genexpert Machine. Go to the “Set up” menu and open “System configuration". In the System Configuration dialog open the “Host communication” tab


Under Host Setting

  1. Ensure "Enable Host Communication" in selected

  2. Ensure "Use Cepheid Link" is disabled

  3. Ensure "Automatic Host Query after Sample ID Scan" is disabled

  4. Ensure "Automatic Test Order Download" is disabled

  5. Ensure "Automatic Result Download" is enabled

  6. Ensure "Use Instrument Specimen ID" is disabled


Under Communication Settings

  1. Ensure the ASTM protocol is selected

  2. Ensure Run Host As Server is selected

  3. Ensure the Server IP address and port match what is shown in the Automation app


Under Host Test Code

  1. Make sure all entries under the Host Test code section are enabled. You can click the edit button to enable each entry.

In the general tab;
  • Ensure "Use Patient ID" is enabled
  • Patient ID 2, Patient Name and demographics can be disabled if you do not intend to use them for filling in surveillance details, otherwise enable them as well
