When connecting a machine using a serial cable, you should ensure the proper drivers are installed especially if you use a USB to Serial cable. Usually serial to serial connections do not need special drivers.
For Prolific USB to serial cables, use the following instructions to set up drivers
- Download the serial driver pack
- Extract the folder and run the Setup
If you are using other cables, please take a look at their manufacturer's setup instructions.
On Ubuntu
Ubuntu doesn't need special drivers to access serial ports. This applies to serial to USB and serial to serial cables.
However, you need to give your user permission to access serial ports. The easiest way to do this is to add them to the `dialout` group using the command below;
